If you’re wondering how you can make the most out of a wedding where you don’t know anyone, we’ve written our top 10 pieces of advice below for you.
Lower your expectations
It’s an unfortunate fact that some weddings just aren’t that much fun. Of course, they’re often great occasions with great company, food and drink, but it’s best not to big up all the good possibilities in your head. Have your expectations remain low but be willing to try and make it as enjoyable as possible.
Remind yourself that not all eyes are on you
If you’re getting worried whether or not you’ll be wearing suitable clothing, or that you’re going to be the only one without a plus one, then don’t! Most people with either be focusing on themselves or on the bride and groom. Remember this and it will be a huge weight off your shoulders.
Start a conversation
This can sometimes be quite a hard thing to do if you don’t know anyone. If you’re sitting at a table, consider that the bride and groom planned the tables to put like-minded people together and that you’ll probably have something to talk about. Just try a simple ice-breaker such as “how do you know the bride and groom?”.
Look for Other People on Their Own
If you want some company, then it’s best to look for someone else on their own. It’s unlikely that you’re the only person there who doesn’t know anyone, so if you see someone else who looks like they’d like a bit of company, don’t be afraid to go over and make some small talk.
Go to the Bar
If you’re nervous that have a couple of drinks can really relax you and take the edge off. This could give you the extra confidence you need to either start dancing or start talking to someone. The bar is also a great place to get chatting to people. Just be careful and don’t get carried away!
Get Some Food
One of my favorite ways to spend my time… going to get some food! Weddings often have delicious food so there’s no better time to go and sample what’s on the menu.
Ask the Bride for Advice
If you’re in the run up to the wedding and you’re worried that you don’t know anyone, then ask the bride (or groom) if there’s anyone interesting going who you might get on with? This can give you some conversation starters.
If you don’t kow what to do, you can always go around taking photos of the guests for the bride and groom. This gives you something to do and will help you introduce yourself to the guests.
Make a song request.
Usually, there’ll be a band or a DJ playing songs at a wedding. Try to request your favorite song to get you in a good mood. If people react well to the song then you can always mention that you were the one that requested it.
Get on the Dance Floor
Once you’ve had a few drinks, don’t be shy to hit the dancefloor. Practice a couple of signature moves that you can show off and try to have fun.
